AICD Implantation

AICD Implantation

What is AICD Implantation?

Automated Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (AICD) Implantation is a procedure used to treat patients at high risk of sudden cardiac arrest due to life-threatening arrhythmias, such as ventricular tachycardia or ventricular fibrillation. An AICD is a small device implanted under the skin near the collarbone that monitors heart rhythms and delivers electrical shocks to restore a normal heartbeat if it detects a dangerous arrhythmia.

The procedure involves making a small incision near the collarbone to create a pocket for the AICD device. Leads (thin, flexible wires) are then inserted through a vein and guided to the heart under X-ray guidance. Once the leads are positioned correctly, they are connected to the AICD, which is then placed in the pocket under the skin. The entire process typically takes about 1 to 2 hours, and patients are usually awake but sedated.

After the implantation, the AICD is programmed to meet the patient specific needs. The device continuously monitors the heart electrical activity and, if it detects an abnormal rhythm, it delivers a shock to reset the heart rhythm to normal. Most modern AICDs can also function as pacemakers, providing regular pacing if the heart rate is too slow.

AICD Implantation is a relatively safe and common procedure with a high success rate. Most patients can return to their normal activities within a few days, although strenuous activities and heavy lifting should be avoided for several weeks. Regular follow-up appointments are necessary to check the AICD function and make any necessary adjustments.

One of the main advantages of an AICD is its ability to significantly reduce the risk of sudden cardiac death in patients with severe heart conditions. It provides continuous protection against life-threatening arrhythmias, offering peace of mind and improving the overall quality of life for patients.

Overall, AICD Implantation is a crucial treatment for managing high-risk arrhythmias, providing reliable and effective protection against sudden cardiac arrest. If your doctor has recommended this procedure, it is important to follow their instructions and prepare accordingly. This procedure plays a vital role in ensuring optimal cardiovascular health and improving patient outcomes.
